Remember the movie Back to the Future when Marty was riding around on his hoverboard? Well, that insane technology is slowly becoming a reality thanks in part to Jill and Greg Henderson, the inventors of Hendo Hoverboards. They’re on the brink of something big, and they’re introducing the world’s first REAL hoverboard and hover developer kit.
The prototype that they have is real and functional, as you can see in the promotional video below. It hovers about 1 inch off the ground, and it uses four disc-shaped hover engines. These four engines create a magnetic field which literally pushes against itself, generating the lift which levitates the board off the ground.
There’s one downside to this, it can only be used over a non-ferrous metal surface. So basically, you couldn’t just walk outside, hop on the board and take it for a spin…… BUT, they are working on perfecting the board so that sometime in the near future it could be used on any surface. In the meantime, Hendo is offering something called the Whitebox developer kit, which offers the same technology as the hoverboard, but on a smaller scale.

If and when their Kickstarter campaign reaches its funding goal of $250,000 by the December 15th deadline, the first round of Hendo Hoverboards will be available on Oct. 21 of next year. It’s currently closing in on $70,000.
