Artist Paul Kaptein has managed to transform ordinary large blocks of wood into distorted and warped images of human monuments. The hand-carved sculptures appear as though they are from some digital glitch or resulted from poor television reception.
Kaptein says he’s interested in examining the undefined area between expansion and contraction, or interconnection and incompleteness. Kaptein’s wood sculptures are currently on display at Krause Gallery in New York until January 26. You’ll definitely want to see it in person if you’re in the NYC area because the degree of distortion shifts depending on what angle you’re looking at it from.
