Have you ever looked closely at the margins and designs of medieval books?
If you do you know that there are peculiar themes in each. Take Knights vs. snails for example.
We saw how brutal rabbits can be in medieval books but why are brave knights illustrated fighting off snails in the margins of medieval illustrations?
According to scholar Lilian Randall, the theory that best explains the unusual motifs is snails represent Lombards, despised leaders in Europe at the time. So the snail actually represented the insult of insults during medieval times as Vox explains in the video below.
This is just a theory though. Marginal art is mysterious, and oftentimes, super complex.
