Studio Ayaskan has created a timepiece that mimics a sand garden. The piece was inspired by an Albert Einstein quote, “Time and space and gravitation have no separate existence from matter.” As time passes each morning, the clock’s hand will then slowly comb the sand in a circular pattern.
By the afternoon, the hand of the sand clock wipes away the patterns. The time can be told depending on the patterns of the lines in the sand, as shown in the diagram below.
Sand, inspired by Zen Gardens, is the gradual formation and flattening of a ripple pattern over a period of twelve hour cycles.
The unique clock belongs to a series titled, “Ripples of Time” with two installations inspired by sand and water.
