The mysterious Maine Coon is one of the largest domesticated cats around.
Their origins remain a mystery and their massive size has earned them the title for the “longest cat” in the 2010 Guinness Book of Wold Records where they measure in at 48.5 inches and weigh up to 35 lbs.
Some believe their massive size is a result of breeding between cats and raccoons but another folk tale suggests Marie Antoinette sent her six Turkish Angora cats to the shores of Wiscasset, Maine while fleeing execution.
While she did not make it to U.S. soil, her cats did and they bred and developed into the modern breed of Maine Coon cats we see today. See their wildly beautiful features in the images below.
