What It’s Like to Sail Through 65 Foot Waves With Insanely High Winds

The Royal New Zealand Navy’s HMNZS Otago sails through a storm in the Southern Ocean with 65 ft swells and 50 mph winds.

According to Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Andrew Sorensen, “Conditions ranged from blue skies and open water to thick fog, snow and moderate ice conditions.”

The HMNZS Otago was on a three week patrol in the Southern ocean when they were hit with a heavy storm.
