Here’s What Happens When An Airbag Deploys A Hundredth Of A Second Late

Airbags have come a long way. They used to be exclusively for higher end vehicles and are now required in every automobile out there. People used to think it could even substitute for seat belts. The invention of the airbag in 1951 has been credited to German engineer Walter Linderer and John W. Hetrick.

John Hetricks’ inspiration for the air bag was credited to his military experience with air torpedoes during his service in the Navy. Turned out, he had wanted protection for his family in their automobiles if they should ever have an accident and decided to invent it himself.
