U.K.-based artist William Utermohlen was diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease in 1995. Before his tragic death in 2007, Utermohlen created a final series of self portraits over a five year time period that documented his struggle with the deadly disease.
Utermohlen’s widow Patricia, referenced these portraits in an essay stating, “In these pictures we see with heart-breaking intensity William’s efforts to explain his altered self, his fears and his sadness.” It’s so sad to see someone not being able to continue doing what they love.
