More and more 3D pedestrian crosswalks are popping up all around the globe to reduce pedestrian related accidents.
According to CDC, “In 2016, 5,987 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States. This averages to one crash-related pedestrian death every 1.5 hours.” While more than 500 pedestrians died while actually using a crosswalk in 2006.
In an effort to reduce these accidents, a small fishing town in Ísafjörður, Iceland, created this clever 3D zebra crosswalk which to an oncoming car creates an optical illusion.
The crosswalk was created by the street painting company Vegmálun GÍH in a collaboration with Icelandic environmental commissioner Ralf Trylla.
