After suffering from traumatic headaches for months, 29 year old Brittany Maynard learned she had brain cancer. “Nine days after my initial diagnoses, I had a partial craniotomy and a partial resection of my temporal lobe,” said Brittany.
Only a few months after the initial surgery the tumor came back more aggressive. “I read about the side effects, the hair on my scalp would have been singed off. My scalp would be left covered with first-degree burns. My quality of life, as I knew it, would be gone,” Brittany wrote.
After months of research Brittany and her family came to the conclusion that no medicine would save her life, and treatment would destroy any life she could expect to have.
On November 1st, two days after her husbands birthday, Brittany will end her life surround by her friends and family. She will be using medicine prescribed by her doctor and will pass peacefully away. Maynard’s family moved with her to Oregon earlier this year so she would have access to Oregon’s “Death with Dignity Act,” which has allowed over 750 people to die using medication since 1997.

“I’ve had the medication for weeks. I am not suicidal. If I were, I would have consumed that medication long ago. I do not want to die. But I am dying. And I want to die on my own terms,” says Brittany.
