31 Brutally Honest Illustrations Show What’s Wrong With Today’s Society

Art isn’t just about pleasing aesthetics; it’s also a medium to convey ideas and spark conversations on societal issues.

Gerhard Haderer, an Austrian cartoonist, stands as a prime example of this notion, having dedicated several decades to the creation of provocative illustrations and cartoons for adults, which unflinchingly shine a light on society’s severe problems.

One of Haderer’s most poignant works, The Life of Jesus, brought him face-to-face with legal challenges. The book stirred up controversy and violent reactions throughout Europe, particularly within the Catholic Church, due to its unfiltered critique of societal issues.

The controversy hit its peak in 2005 when Haderer was charged and sentenced in Greece to a six-month suspended sentence in absentia for offending the religious community. However, this sentence was later overturned on appeal, and Haderer was cleared of all charges.

Haderer’s signature style, characterized by realism, traces back to his early days as a graphic designer and illustrator for advertising agencies. A significant turning point in his career came in 1985 after cancer surgery, leading him to bid adieu to his commercial ambitions. He embarked on a new journey as a freelance caricaturist and satirical illustrator, with a primary focus on social issues.

Feel free to explore his work, characterized by a sense of unease and occasional fright, which are visual expressions of societal truths.
